Carlsbad NM should not be a place anyone thinks of as a foodie-friendly destination. But, there are a few shining nuggets, the foremost of which is Blue House Bakery.
On our search for local coffee, we had to look no further than a few blocks from our AirBnb. Blue House welcomes from the curb to the counter with a nicely landscaped arbor to it's historical porch to the tall counter covered with baked items, coffee options and a portrait of the owner's cat. This is local coffee at its finest.
We ordered coffee and breakfast in the form of a Honey Latte and a Sausage Egg Croissant sandwich. I tried a house blend drip coffee that was robust and smooth. The sandwich was one of those simple things in life: a combination of fresh ingredients coming together to make a delicious flavor. In the few days we were in Carlsbad, most of the food we found was things like "not chicken" in a burrito with "not guacamole". We were so excited to find Blue House we ate here every chance we could.
The customers seemed to be mainly regulars who knew the staff by name. The owner is from San Diego and likes the slower pace of Carlsbad. She's collected a clientele of interesting people in a homey communal atmosphere that was very fun to be a part of, even as a casual visitor. If you are making a visit to Carlsbad, I highly recommend Blue House! -

Baked goods to die for! It's a good thing I don't live here because I'd probably gain ten pounds coming here every day to get my baked goods fix.
The cinnamon roll and blueberry scone were amaze-balls. We were told the cinnamon rolls take three days to make. That's a lot of love.
We also got the breakfast burrito with sausage and potatoes (add ons) and breakfast bagel with sausage to-go bright and early for our trek out to Carlsbad Caverns. The salsa that goes with it packs quite a punch. Consider yourself forewarned.
They also offer quite the brewed coffee selection. I'm a sucker for flavored coffee, so of course I went with the Southwest pecan. Tasty!
Service was very fast and friendly! We would have come back the next day, but they're closed on Sundays. -

This is so California. The organic coffee. The crafted breakfast food. The cafe feel. It was very strange but also very homey. Loved it. Wish I took pictures of the food.

My favorite and so keto friendly. Get there early because baked goods go fast. Friendly staff and nice seating inside and out.
